John Wesley: field preaching, class discipline, and Methodism from revival to church
Wesley joined conversion, sanctification, and disciplined small groups so revival endured through itinerants, class records, and charity rather than mass preaching alone. Seeking renewal within the Church of England, he nevertheless left a transatlantic denominational network.
H-track | Anglican priest, Aldersgate, and revival turn
Understanding John Wesley begins with the surrounding world. Christianity's demographic center moved southward; missions were entangled with empire but never reducible to it, as local Christians translated and transformed the faith.
Revivals used field preaching Mass networks crossed parishes and personal testimony gained authority. For John Wesley specifically, born in 1703 to an Anglican clerical family, Wesley organized disciplined Oxford devotion, failed in Georgia, then experienced assurance at Aldersgate in 1738 and adopted itinerant field preaching.
This evidence must be read with the surrounding discussion and listed sources.
H-track | Itinerancy, class records, and transatlantic organization
The decisive experience of John Wesley unfolds as follows: Societies, classes, and lay leaders enabled scale. He opposed slavery yet enforced strong discipline and did not initially plan a new denomination; revolution and ordination drove separation. To place John Wesley within the full movement of this period: Revivals and Methodism emphasized conversion and reform. Mission societies used imperial routes and often shared colonial assumptions, though some criticized slavery and abuse. Indigenous translators, teachers, women, and independent churches actively reshaped language, worship, education, and anticolonial politics.
Ecumenism and Vatican II revised relations across confessions and with the modern world. Pentecostal and charismatic movements expanded rapidly in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Today secularization, conservatism, liberation, feminist, and indigenous theologies coexist; Europe and North America no longer stand for Christianity as a whole. John Wesley was born in 1703 to an Anglican clerical family. At Oxford, disciplined prayer, fasting, communion, and prison and poor relief with Charles Wesley and companions earned the name Methodist. His Georgia mission failed. The 1738 Aldersgate experience of a heart "strangely warmed" became a conversion center, but diaries show assurance developing over time rather than one instant.
Field preaching, itinerants, societies, classes, and bands carried revival beyond parish structures. Wesley remained an Anglican priest yet ordained for America after independence, helping Methodism become separate. He disputed predestination with George Whitefield and taught prevenient grace, universal invitation, and Christian perfection, while opposing the slave trade. Women, lay leaders, and print networks were essential to expansion. Christian perfection concerned perfected love rather than errorless existence. Disputes with Whitefield did not end cooperation, and later Methodist expansion combined lay mobilization and reform with accommodation to racial and imperial orders. Conference governance, connexional resources, and class-level accountability explain how Methodism outlived its founder and diversified across countries. This explains the combination of personal testimony with highly institutional conference and discipline.
T-track | Order of salvation, entire sanctification, and Methodist identity
Religion of the heart, social holiness, and hymn traditions. Methodist tradition forms disciples through Wesley's order of grace, assurance, social holiness, and small-group accountability. Hymns, love feasts, and conferences turned experience into institution. Branches differ over entire sanctification: some emphasize a crisis experience, others lifelong growth.
Holiness, Salvation Army, and some Pentecostal traditions inherit and transform these themes rather than simply repeating Wesley. "The world is my parish" symbolizes mission, while antislavery letters and poor relief support social witness; early Methodism nevertheless operated within empire and class hierarchy. Ecumenical reception stresses Wesley's Anglican liturgy, patristic sources, and Reformation inheritance.
Renewal, reform, schism, colonial transmission, and political appropriation all belong. Wesley's durable innovation was organizational—turning revival into repeatable learning Revival within Anglicanism grows into transatlantic Methodist networks; linked to popular religion in the Enlightenment era.
