From fallen monarchy to Roman destruction: five and a half centuries of Jewish reorganization under empires

The exile and Second Temple period, 586 BCE to 70 CE, spans Babylonian, Persian, Hellenistic, Hasmonean, and Roman rule. Its main line is not restoration of the old state after one return, but recombination of temple, Torah, diaspora, priests, scribes, and multiple groups within empires. Later Hebrew Bible books, deuterocanonical works, Dead Sea Scrolls, Josephus, and the New Testament arise from or narrate this world, but represent different communities and cannot be merged into one seamless newspaper.

Babylonian exile, Persian Yehud, and the normalization of diaspora

Jerusalem's fall in 586 BCE ended Davidic rule and First Temple sacrifice, but Babylon deported selected royals, officials, soldiers, and artisans in waves; many farmers remained, and others fled to Egypt. Deportees in Babylonian canal settlements farmed, married, incurred debt, and kept Judean names. Jehoiachin ration texts and later Al-Yahudu tablets offer nonbiblical windows into this life. Exile was violent displacement and the beginning of enduring multiple Jewish centers.

After Cyrus took Babylon in 539 BCE, some groups returned in stages. Altar and temple were restored amid Persian authorization and local conflict, with completion around 515. Persian Yehud was small and lacked its own king; governors, priests, families, and imperial taxation shared rule. Ezra–Nehemiah centers Torah reading, Sabbath, debt, and intermarriage while revealing conflict between returnee elites and residents. Babylonian communities endured, and Jewish soldiers at Elephantine in Egypt even maintained a YHW sanctuary, showing nonuniform practice.

Hellenism, Maccabean war, and the Hasmonean state

After Alexander conquered the Levant in 332 BCE, Judaea passed under Ptolemaic and Seleucid rule. Hellenism was not simply foreign pagan culture crushing the faithful. Greek language, coinage, education, and legal forms were adopted unevenly, and Alexandrian Jews translated Torah into Greek. Jerusalem priestly families used imperial rivalry to contest high priesthood and taxation. Cultural adoption, class, and political loyalty intertwined; “Greeks versus Jews” is inadequate.

Seleucid wars, fiscal pressure, and rivalry over Jerusalem's high priesthood escalated in the second century BCE. Antiochus IV's prohibitions, cultic transformation, and coercion around 167 triggered Maccabean revolt; 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, and Daniel interpret it differently. Judah Maccabee's purification of the temple in 164 became Hanukkah memory, but war continued until the Hasmonean family acquired high priesthood, territory, and near-kingship. A resistance movement became a state-building project.

Hasmonean rulers expanded into Samaria, Idumaea, and Galilee, destroyed rival sanctuaries, and incorporated populations into Jewish political-ritual order; the nature and coercion of Idumaean circumcision in Josephus remain debated. Combining high priesthood and kingship provoked opposition over legitimacy, war, and wealth. Pharisees, Sadducees, Essene-like groups, apocalyptic circles, and others were not modern denominations but overlapping networks around temple, purity, resurrection, calendar, and interpretation.

Rome, Herod's temple, and crisis in a diverse Jewish world

Pompey entered Jerusalem in 63 BCE, turning Hasmonean civil war into Roman domination. Herod, backed by Rome, gained the throne in 37 BCE. He killed rivals, taxed, and built fortresses and Greco-Roman cities while massively enlarging the Jerusalem temple to seek Jewish legitimacy. After his death the kingdom was divided; Judaea became a Roman province in 6 CE. Governors, high priests, Herodian descendants, and urban elites created layered rule with limited autonomy and recurring friction.

Late Second Temple Jews shared circumcision, Sabbath, festivals, food boundaries, Torah, and Jerusalem temple; pilgrimage and the half-shekel linked diaspora to the city. Commonality did not erase disagreement. Greek and Aramaic coexisted, synagogues and households carried local life, women, farmers, merchants, and priests met institutions differently, and resurrection, apocalypse, and oral interpretation were contested. Jesus and his first followers belonged inside this Jewish world, not an external Christianity inserted into background.

Roman taxation, misrule, local class conflict, and apocalyptic hope erupted into war in 66. Rebels were divided, Rome reduced regions, and the temple fell in 70. The building that names the period ended, but Jewish life did not: diaspora communities, synagogues, prayer, households, and sage networks already existed and recombined afterward. Treating 586 BCE–70 CE as one period helps follow the temple but must not imply 650 years of stasis or a story moving inevitably toward destruction.

Debate

Should the period be described as one common Judaism or multiple competing Judaisms?
Common-Judaism models stress Torah, temple, festivals, circumcision, and the God–Israel relationship as a widely shared frame within which groups argued.
Plural models stress Samaritans, Dead Sea groups, diaspora texts, calendars, and legal difference, using the plural to avoid projecting later rabbinic norms backward.

Both scales are necessary. Without common texts, temple, and identity vocabulary, the intensity of dispute is inexplicable; without regional, class, and group difference, elite texts become everyone's life. Each issue should state what was shared, by whom, and where it differed.
